The Most Unique Library in Iraq
Inside Central Park in Baghdad, near Zeitoun Street, a tiny new library has opened.
A small blue box on the side of the path with two shelves inside, filled with books, the so called ‘Mustansiryah Library’ was founded by a group of young people in 2015.
Anyone can take a book from the boxes. The only expectation is that you leave a book behind for someone else to pick up after you.
The founders are confident there will be no theft because, they say: “Readers don’t steal and thieves don’t read.”
“The idea of a library like this is unique and it’s useful,” said one citizen seen passing the library, with another adding: “I hope these libraries are created all over Baghdad because there is so much real pleasure in reading books. I hope people stop downloading books from the internet.”
