27 years ago today one of the worst environmental disasters to have hit North America occurred, when oil tanker the Exxon Valdez ran aground in Prince William Sound, Alaska. 240,000 barrels of oil were spilt. The effects of the event are still felt today, as local wildlife populations have still not fully recovered and scientists estimating that around 75,000 litres of oil remains on beaches in the area.
