Over 800 Cases of Food Poisoning In IDP Camps in Northern Iraq
Two people have died from food poisoning and hundreds more Iraqi IDPs are suffering symptoms, after consuming food donated by RAF – a Qatari charity organisation – in Hassan Sham U2 and Khazir IDP camps near Erbil.
Doctor Shakhawan Khailany from Erbil’s Health Department of Health told Yalla: “638 people, of which 320 were young children, were rushed to hospital with food poisoning within the first hour.”
Khailany said: “The poisoning occurred as a result of consuming chicken, rice and beans prepared by a restaurant in Erbil,” adding that there is no indication that the food was intentionally contaminated.
In a press conference earlier today, Erbil Governor Nawzad Hady said that the owner of the restaurant and six of his employees have been taken into custody for questioning.
