BREAKING: Iraqi Forces Surround Village After Overnight ISIL Attack
Early Thursday morning ISIL extremists launched an attack on Imam Gharib village, in the Qayyarah district, south of Mosul.
The village, close to the frontline, was known to security forces as a possible hiding place for ISIL sleeper cells, with a population widely perceived to be sympathetic to the group’s aims.
Three members of a Sunni militia connected to government Hashd al-Shaabi forces were killed, and fourteen injured in the attack, which included suicide bombers.
A Hashd commander was taken hostage, along with three of his fighters. The Sunni militia responsible for security in the area have complained of being poorly equipped and untrained.
Reinforcements arrived this morning and have now surrounded the ISIL fighters.
