Shallaw Mohammed – Yalla – Makhmur
The Nineveh Operations Command has been expanding military operations against ISIL in the Makhmour district west of Erbil towards the Nineveh Governorate, with the help of Kurdistan Peshmerga and air support provided by the International.
Here Yalla publishes details of the participating forces.
Nineveh Operations Command, part of the Iraqi Army, is comprised of the 15th Division including 71st Brigade, 72nd Brigade, 73rd Brigade, 74th Brigade, and the 91st Defense Brigade from Al Anbar forces. These forces will be taking part in the liberation of Mosul.
The 15th Division of the Iraqi Army was formed on 6 January 2004 and its first commander was Abdul Amir Khalaf. Since 24 February 2015 the Division has been the main component of Nineveh Operations Command led by Major General Najim Abdullah al-Jubouri.
Nineveh Operations Command has 11,000 soldiers including Arabs [Sunni and Shiite], Kurds, and Turkmen, but the majority are Arabs from Mosul and Al Anbar governorate.
“The 15th Division of the Iraqi Army has undergone a series of trainings by American and British military consultants in Baghdad in order to make certain of their military capabilities,” Major General al-Jubouri, commander of Nineveh liberation operations told Yalla. “According to the plan, Nineveh Operations Command will have a major role in the recapture of Mosul, therefore, all the decisions related to attacking ISIL will be made by the Command Centre.”
According to information obtained by Yalla, in addition to the 15th Division the forces that will be participating in liberating Nineveh include Nineveh Federal Police, Artillery Battalion of the 15th Division, Hashd al-Watani, four Iraqi Army M17 and BELL helicopters, International Coalition Air Forces, and Kurdistan Peshmerga Forces.
“The fight for Mosul will be tough but we have strong cooperation with the forces participating in the operations, for example, Hashd al-Watani forces were transferred to the front line in Gwer and we achieved great successes,” Major General al-Jubouri added.
