Reports: Arrests Made Over Allegations Of Sunni Executions Around Fallujah
Reuters reports that government spokesman Saad al-Hadithi has announced the arrest of a number of Shi’ite militiamen, accused of executing 49 Sunni men that surrendered to them between 3 June and 5 June.
This is the first action against widely-reported human rights abuses carried out by members of Shi’ite factions. Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has ordered that abusers are detained and face justice.
Spokespeople for the Popular Mobilisation Forces have repeatedly denied any wrongdoing in the operation to free the Sunni majority city, launched 23 May. The United Nations has said that up to 90,000 people remain trapped in the city with extremely limited access to food and water.
