Singers From Ivory Coast Defy Al Qaeda
Musicians from the Ivory Coast in Africa have come together to record a song declaring they are not afraid of Al Qaeda. The video was shot on Grand Bassam, the scene of an Al Qaeda attack earlier this month, in which 19 people were murdered.
Translated lyrics include “we are not afraid” and warn, “You will not go to paradise”. The song also takes ownership of the peaceful message of Islam, declaring, “Islam is a religion that promotes love, you kill innocents for lost causes.”
“Meme Pas Peur” – “can’t scare us” – is a typical Ivorian reaction to tragedy. The country has shown unity in the face of everything from terrorist attacks to bird flu. Scores of families have returned to the beach to show defiance, not fear.
