Iraqs Footballers Progress To Next World Cup Qualifying Round

The Lions of Mesopotamia secured their place in the 3rd qualifying round to keep their dream of a place at the World Cup in Russia in 2018 alive.

Midfielder Abdul Raheem displayed immense composure to score after his 22nd minute header hit the bar and fell to his feet. The 1-0 win over Vietnam in Tehran ensured that Iraq qualified as the highest placed group runners up, after Jordan were humbled 5-1 by the Socceroos in Australia.

Iraq (ranked 91 in the world by FIFA) now joins Australia (67), China (96), Iran (44), Japan (56), Qatar (80), Saudi Arabia (60), South Korea (57), Syria (123), Thailand (118), UAE (64) and Uzbekistan (74) in the draw for the two groups of the next round. It will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia 12 April.
