Neymar Scores Twice As Barcelona Crush Getafe
No fairy tale for Benitez, as Leicester squeeze past Newcastle
This weekend’s La Liga matches saw the top teams pull away from fourth-placed Villarreal who lost 4-2 at Sevilla. Barcelona strolled past Getafe 6-0 at the Camp Nou, with Brazilian striker Neymar scoring twice. Such is Barcelona’s dominance this season, it’s hard to see either of the Madrid teams, who both won this weekend, challenging for the title.
At the other end of the table, bottom team Levante registered an important victory against Valencia, drawing level on points with Sporting de Gijón who lost away to Málaga. Goal difference could well play a factor at the end of the season, as Getafe’s humbling sees them just one goal better off than Levante.
In a quieter week in the English Premier League, Leicester re-established their five-point lead at the top on Monday evening, making hard work of getting past Newcastle. The Sunderland fan in the office watched the game, and said: “I’m relieved they didn’t get any points, but I can see the Benitez effect suddenly appearing this weekend when Newcastle play us. That said, for all their industry, the players just didn’t look like getting through Leicester’s defence. If Big Sam has got our back four marshaled by Sunday, it could be seven wins in a row in the derby for Sunderland.”
Elsewhere at the top Spurs kept the pressure on the race, Aston Villa capitulating (again) to a 2-0 defeat in front of their home fans. Manchester City fell further behind, failing to break down Norwich who showed a desire for the fight to stay in the league. Swansea look to be safe, even though they lost 3-2 at Bournemouth – the eight point difference looks too much to overhaul for the teams below them. In the weekend’s other game Stoke lost 2-1 at home to Southampton.
