Real Prevail In The Madrid Champions League Final
In a tight match in Milan’s San Siro Stadium, Real Madrid defeated neighbours Atletico Madrid to lift the European Champions’ Club Cup for the second time in three years. It marks Zinedine Zidane’s first silverware as head coach, and heartache for Atletico who just three weeks ago were in contention for a European and domestic cup double, but end the season empty handed.
The match was decided by penalties, after Yannick Carrasco smashed home from close range to cancel out Sergio Ramos’ first half opener. With neither side able to break the deadlock in extra time, Cristiano Ronaldo scored the decisive spot kick after Juanfran hit the post for Atletico.
As one would expect, the match was a hot-blooded affair, with eight bookings. Portuguese defender Pepe deserves a special mention for several shameful instances of play-acting, for which he somehow escaped a yellow card until the 112th minute.
