Sevilla Seal Three-In-A-Row As Liverpool Crumble
Sevilla tasted European glory for the third straight year, as they dismantled Liverpool in seven second half minutes in Basel on Wednesday night. It is the first time a team has registered a major European trophy hat-trick since Bayern Munich 1974-76.
The opening minutes were scrappy, with a nervous Liverpool easily outplayed by Sevilla. However, it was the English side that registered the first shots on target with Sevilla keeper Solis tested twice as the game settled down. Liverpool’s confidence grew and Sturridge’s sublime strike with the outside of his left boot put them ahead.
It was almost all one way traffic for the rest of the opening 45 minutes, with a clear-cut penalty claim as Sevilla’s Carrico handled in the area. Referee Jonas Eriksson, who had a mixed evening, waved the appeal away.
Whatever was said in the dressing rooms at half time changed everything. Liverpool came out once again nervous, and Sevilla were on level terms just 18 seconds after kick off. From then on, the English side never looked like winning as Sevilla delivered a master class in possession football which saw them score Moreno score twice in seven minutes.
Yalla’s resident Liverpool fan has spent the morning torturing himself reading match reports. We can confirm that he is not this guy.
