World Cup Qualifying – Asia Round 2
Iraq’s dream of reaching the World Cup in Russia in 2018 hangs in the balance, as they were the sole ‘home’ team to fail to register a victory in the latest matches in Round 2 of the Asian qualifying competition. The fact that they only rescued a draw through a Thai own goal in the dying minutes of the match in Tehran doesn’t do justice to the team. In both games against Thailand they have dominated but failed to make it pay.
Now they must qualify as one of the four best runners-up. Simply put, if the Lions beat Vietnam in the Iranian capital on Tuesday, and one of North Korea, Jordan or UAE lose, they will go through. Jordan travel to top of the group Australia, and UAE host group leaders Saudi Arabia.
